Course Content
The course includes the following topics relating to experimental animals: Ethical, welfare, and legislative aspects of using animals for research; biology and pathology, husbandry and nutrition, genetics, breeding, transgenesis, anaesthesia and analgesia of laboratory animals, experimental procedures, alternatives to animal use and analysis of relevant scientific literature.

The teaching of the various course topics is fully integrated in the following BSc-courses:
- Vet. introductory course (LVEB10405): Introduction, ethical, welfare aspects of lab animal holding
- Vet. chemistry and Biochemistry (LVEB10411): Laboratory safety og practice
- Vet. genetics (LVEB101101) / Nutrition and breeding (LVEB10388 ): Lab. animal genetics, breeding and transgenesis
- Basic statistics and epidemiology (LVEB10406): Experimental designs
- Immunology, gen. pathology and pathophysiology (LVEB10389): Immunology
- Infection microbiology (LVEB10391) /Herd health and public health (LVEB10408): Zoonoses and biological riscs in relation to lab. animals
- Nutrition and breeding (LVEB10388): Husbandry and nutrition
- Basic pharmacology, toxicology and pharmacy (LVEB10390) / Veterinary paraclinics - 1 (LVEB10404): Anaesthesia and analgesia - Basic pharmacology, toxicology and pharmacy (LVEB10390): Experimental procedures on and handling of lab. animals
- Veterinary jurisprudence and ethology (LVEB10409) - Legislative aspects of using lab. animals and alternatives to animal use

Teaching and learning Methods
Lectures will be given either face-to-face or placed as e-learning on Absalon. Handling and experimental techniques will be practiced on dummies and live animals

Learning Outcome
The course is a category B course in accordance with the European Council's convention ETS 123 and the Councils Resolution on Education and Training of Persons Working with Laboratory Animals from December 3, 1993 and it is accredited by the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations as well as the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries according to Ministerial Order 1016 from December 12 2001. The course gives a practical and theoretical introduction to handling, housing and using laboratory animals and how to replace, refine and reduce the use of live animals for research.

Having completed the course it is expected that the student has the following:

Knowledge
The student knows:
- that animal experimentation is complicated and requires current training to secure the well-being of the animals and the scientific outcome
- the biological basis of laboratory animal breeding and maintenance including basic genetics and reproduction, health monitoring and animal welfare
- the legal basis for animal experimentation - the principles of the three R's and availability of alternative methods

Skills
The student is able to:
- explain the basic principles on how to use animals for research
- reflect over the ethical basis for the use of animals for research

Competencies
The student is able to:
- perform basic handling of mice and rats when used for research
- from a legal point of view participate in animal experimentation under somebody else's license and supervision
