PhD students can give either a 15 min oral presentations OR present a poster. Of the poster presenters, some will be selected to also present their results by giving a 4 min oral talk using 3 powerpoint slides. The style of the presentations should aim at a non-specialist scientific audience, emphasizing the general aspects of on-going research. The conference will offer a space for you as PhD students from different subject areas at PLEN to meet and share ideas, practice presenting in a supportive academic environment to a new audience. Each participant will receive feedback from senior staff members and students. The course is a 2-day meeting (meals, accommodation and transport to the meeting from Frederiksberg Campus included) and consists of . oral presentations by PhD students in 3 parallel sessions . active case-based workshops on the PhD-student-supervisor relationship . a keynote talk by Jørgen E. Olesen on the effect of climate change on plants and the environment . poster session and oral presentations of selected posters . conference dinner and team building singing exercise run by Jacob Høgsbro By participating PhD students will . get the opportunity to present their work in a conference setting and discuss their projects with other PLEN researchers . practice to evaluate presentations and give constructive feedback to peers . receive written feedback on your presentation (talk or poster) from peers and assessment panel and personal feedback after the meeting . have a chance of winning prizes for best poster, best oral presentation and best oral poster presentation as well as audience prizes . have lots of opportunity to meet and network with other PLEN researchers . be eligible for 2 ECTS credits Preliminary conference program: Day 1- 9 April 2013 8.00 Departure from SCIENCE Frederiksberg Campus 8.40 Arrival at Krogerup Højskole, Humlebæk, putting posters on display 9.00-9.10 Welcome, general information 9.10-10.00 Keynote talk - Jørgen E. Teaching and learning Methods
Students are encouraged to participate in a workshop on either "how to make an excellent poster" and "how to give a great oral presentation" before the conference. Time and place of this workshop will be announced in the PLEN newsletter. The preparation and delivery of posters and oral presentations will make students think about how to explain their science to peers and have an opportunity to do so. During the conference, students will practice to evaluate presentations and give constructive feedback to peers and will receive written feedback on presentations (talk or poster) from peers and the assessment panel. The opportunity of personal feedback after the meeting and submission of reflective notes should encourage learning.
Learning Outcome | |||||||||||
The Research Program at PLEN aims at improving PhD education, stimulating new research and increasing interactions within the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at UCPH SCIENCE. There will be ample opportunities for discussions and feed-back on research issues and the PhD students should see the conference as a good opportunity for training their presentation skills and marketing scientific results. The workshops on PhD supervision will form the basis for renewed focus on how PhD supervision is carried out to the inspiration of both students and supervisors. Students will be an integral part in the evaluation of presentations which will further develop skills to evaluate and communicate scientific communication.
