Kursus resuméWhat is responsible conduct for a researcher at University of Copenhagen? This is the central topic for this course. You will learn about the notions of research integrity, authorship issues, responsible conduct of researchers, documentation of scientific results, and explore the connection between misconduct and the development of modern science. Responsible Conduct of Research will give you the expected required skills within good research practise.

Kursusindhold
The course consists of four class modules. Each module will last 1 ½ hours and combine a lecture and interaction with students regarding cases:

1. Overview of the topic: Responsible Conduct of Research, Research Misconduct, and Questionable Conduct of Research including a brief history, terminology, definitions and a description of the institutions dealing with Responsible Conduct of Research and allegations for Research Misconduct.

2. Authorship: including a presentation of the norms regarding publication, various kinds of deviations from these norms, and handling of the many grey zone issues to which the application of these norms give rise.

3. Documentation of scientific results and handling and keeping of scientific data, and intellectual property: standards, rights and duties.

4. Conflicts of interest and commitment, and communication with the public.
 
Undervisningsform
Lectures, discussions and exercises. The course includes a written assignment which has to be handed-in 2 weeks after the course.
 
Målbeskrivelse
After having passed the course, the student must be familiar with norms relating to Responsible Conduct of Research and problems concerning Scientific Misconduct or Questionable Conduct of Research, and their background in the development of modern science and science governance.
- Specifically the student must be able to describe and discuss various kinds of scientific misconduct, including: Fabrication; Falsification; Plagiarism and Gross negligence
- Describe the grey zone of Questionable Conduct of Research (including unacceptable authorship)
- Describe how allegations of research misconduct are raised and the principles for handling suspicions of Scientific Misconduct
- Describe national and international institutions handling Scientific Misconduct or dealing with Questionable Conduct of Research
- Explain and apply norms of Responsible Conduct of Research for the following specific subjects: Documentation of scientific results; Handling and keeping of scientific data; Authorship; Intellectual property rights; Conflicts of interest and commitment; Communication with the public.
 
Kursusmateriale
For each module there will be a curriculum of around 50 pages, a total of around 200 pages. The course material will be available to the participants prior to the course and they will be encouraged to read it in advance. The curriculum can be requested from the course organizers.

The modules will be taught by a group of lecturers who together possess state of the art knowledge in the field. The group of lecturers share knowledge and course material.

This course is mandatory for all PhD students enrolled after 1 January 2012 (oldSCIENCE) or 1 April 2012 (oldLIFE). The content of this course is included in the Introduction Course for New PhD Students.
