The course will focus on describing, exemplifying, discussing and applying basic concepts, strategies and theories used in public health, epidemiology and planning of health interventions. National and/or international professionals in health promotion and preventive nutrition will introduce the students to the organisations they represent, and exemplify their work through actual cases. | |||||||||||||||
Teaching and learning Methods | |||||||||||||||
The course will be a combination of lectures, group work, seminars and exercises. The course includes lectures on "The Logical Framework Approach", a theory and planning model behind nutrition interventions. In groups, the students will plan a public health intervention based on this model, and write a group report. | |||||||||||||||
Learning Outcome | |||||||||||||||
The main objective of the course is to provide the students with the ability to explain, discuss, and exemplify central concepts, theories, strategies and the role of stakeholders in public health in relation to nutrition, and to design and critically reflect on a public health intervention based on the Logical Framework Approach. A central theme in the course is social inequality in health. Knowledge: - Describe basic concepts, theories and strategies in public health science, with special focus on nutrition and health. - Describe processes behind the planning of public health interventions in the field of nutrition. - Identify central public and private stakeholders within nutrition and demonstrate overview of their responsibilities. Skills: - Explain and exemplify basic concepts, theories and strategies in public health science, with special focus on nutrition and health. - Reflect on, compare and evaluate relevant public health policies. - Apply theories on the planning of preventive strategies and interventions and demonstrate the ability to conduct a needs analysis, define goals, identify determinants for the health behavior and outcomes of the target group, choose relevant methods and evaluate the intervention. Competences: - Discuss and evaluate central concepts, theories and strategies in public health. - Discuss interests related to policies of relevance to nutrition. - Plan a health-promoting intervention by use of an acknowledged planning model, e.g. the Logical Framework Approach. | |||||||||||||||
