Kursusindhold
The course includes theoretical and practical teaching concerning various aquaculture types (freshwater pond culture, mariculture, recirculated systems) and various natural aquatic biotopes. Additional topics treated are water quality aspects, environmental aspects of aquaculture, fish welfare, fish physiology, nutrition, feed technology, fish immunology, vaccinology, parasitology, virology and bacteriology. Practical aspects concerning sampling and diagnosis have high priority. Focus will be placed on prophylactic aspects and management methods. Classical and molecular methods will be applied in the practical exercises.

Undervisningsform
Teaching includes lectures, seminars, practical exercises, excursions (to fish farming sites, farming industries, natural resorts, and feed production facilities) and project work.

Målbeskrivelse
The aim of the course is to educate students in processes associated with production of aquatic organisms. Special emphasis will be placed on diseases connected with the production. The course will educate the students to be able to evaluate and suggest solutions to various aquaculture problems with special emphasis on disease aspects. Thus, basic principles in aquaculture techniques and methods for determining fish diseases will be obtained and make the students able to solve questions within these fields. The students will be educated in control methods with emphasis on prophylaxis.
The students will apply theories and principles of fish pathology to new areas and problems in new contexts.

The students will cooperate diagnostic methods for identification of parasitic, bacterial and viral pathogens. They will expand the applicability of the methods by including theories and methods also for new, complex and un-predictable situations. They will predict health related aspects of fish production systems according to new situations under different abiotic and biotic conditions. They will make ethical considerations of problems in fish disease research and aquacultural enterprises. Discuss and reflect on legislative and ethical problems related to aquaculture and fish disease management.
