| Course Content |
The main course may include the following topics; Basic behaviour of the biologically important metal ions of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn in aqueous solutions and biological fluids; Synthetic and structural aspects of coordination chemistry; Structure and function of metalloenzymes; Spectrocopic and physical methods in bioinorganic chemistry; Thermodynamic and kinetic stability of coordination compounds; Computer simulation of structure and properties of coordination compounds and metal-binding sites in metalloproteins. Collective, weekly tutorials and discussions based on extensive individual studies of textbook material as well as original literature. Active participation in group discussions is a requirement. If requested, a project may be undertaken in supplement to the tutorials by individuals or smaller groups of students. Evaluation of such a project is by oral defence of a written report. For project work literature studies, computational or experimental work may be included, by arrangement. |
