Kursusindhold
The course contains information and exercises on feeds and feed evaluation in relation to different livestock species (ruminants, pigs, poultry and horses). The students will learn how to find information about feeds and animal requirements. They will learn how to assess the quality of various feeds for different animals. Chemical composition and digestibility of feeds as well as nutrient content and availability and content of anti-nutritional factors will be discussed. Further, different systems of feed evaluation (energy, protein etc.) for the different livestock species, will be presented. Feed improvement, conservation and storage as well as different feeding strategies, will also be included to a limited extent. Various computer models and programmes to simulate digestion and to optimize feed rations will be discussed and one programme based on linear programming will be used by the students.

Undervisningsform
E- learning course. The course will consist of a number of activities in relation to a specific case. The activities and discussions will be performed by using the e-learning programme "Absalon".

Målbeskrivelse
The aim of the course is to educate students in feeds, their classification and characteristics, chemical composition and availability. Further, it is the aim to enable the students to apply and expand their knowledge on feeds and livestock to optimise the use of available feed resources and make recommendations on fodder production and/or purchase of feeds for livestock in a variety of situations.

When the course has finished it is expected that the student:

Know:
-What characteristics of the feeds that are important for their feed values
-What analysis that can be made to predict the feed value of different feeds
-What analysis is important on the different feeds and for the use to different animals
-Where they can find the requirements of different animals for the different nutrients
-How to compose a diet to animals when the requirements of the animals and the nutritive value of the feeds

Are able to:
-Describe the nutritive value of feeds in the relevant terms for the different catagories of animals
-Request relevant laboratory analysis to predict the nutritive value of different feeds for different catagories of animals
-In the literature to find the necessary values for requirements of different nutrients to different animals
-Calculate a relevant feed plan for animals of a given catagory and production level

Have competences in:
-Basic science transfer and use of knowledge, teories and methods of chemistry and physiology to different feed evaluation systems
-Evaluation of different feeds in relation to different livestock species and production
-Using different feed evaluation systems to different production systems and make judgement of the validity of the different chemical and biological methods used for feed evaluation.
-Feed planning to different catagories of animals and in different production systems
-In ethics and values
-Judgement of the use of different feeding of livestock in relation to animal welfare and in relation to environmental aspects.
