Kursusindhold
The aim of the course is to provide students with IT abilities as well as aesthetic and creative skills in incorporating digital tools in the project design process and in the production of visual landscape architecture design presentations.

Various tools and techniques for 2D and 3D design sketching processes and presentations will be introduced throughout the course through lectures, dicussions, tutorials and computer lab exercises.

Guest lecturers will exemplify how digital tools and techniques for visualisation are used for design and communication in a landscape architecture practice. Theoretical lectures will introduce visual communication skills such as image composition, colour theory, perspective drawing and diagram construction.

We will discuss the differences between photorealistic representations and digital model abstractions and what qualities and conflicts lie in these various visualisation approaches.
What types of visualizations are suitable for what situations and to which target groups?

Through experiments and discussions we will explore how the various tools can enhance and conceal different qualities through the project design process and hence influence the design decisions.

These sessions combined should provide students with basic proficiency in the computer software used and an overview of digital visualization techniques and creative methods.

The course is organised around a specific landscape architecture design project exercise that will be used as case for exploring the various programs and techniques throughout the course. We will work with diagrams, photo collages, 3D models and presentation lay out in Adobe tools like PhotoShop, Illustrator and InDesign and in 3D programs like AutoCAD.

The student outputs are the results of the weekly digitally enhanced design exercises: analytical diagrams, vision collages, model mock-ups and 3d visualizations of the landscape architecture project. Results have to be handed in digitally by the end of each week.

Project drawings will be combined in a digital presentation consisting of a web site design, a PowerPoint presentation or a InDesign layout for final examination.

Software used is Illustrator, PhotoShop, AutoCAD-Civil, 3D-Viz and Dream Weaver and othes.

Undervisningsform
Theoretical lectures on image composition and communication. Guest lectures on practice examples. Discussions of different design and visualisation paradigms. Tutorials on digital tools. Computer lab exercises. Landscape design project. Background material is found on www.novaland.kvl.dk. Student results are all along the course period published on campusnet for communication and critiques. Some students will be asked to present their exercise results for the entire class, but this is not part of the assessment.

Målbeskrivelse
Being able to illustrate and communicate ideas and design decisions is an important competence for a landscape architect. The course will focus on skills in handling the most commonly used digital tools as well as on creative and aesthetic abilities in creating graphic landscape architecture representations.

Knowledge:

Basic knowledge of how various digital visual representational tools can assist the design, representation and communication of a landscape architectural project.

Comprehend the different design paradigms of digital tools and what different qualities and conflicts lies in various visualisation approaches.

Skills:

Technical, aesthetic and creative skills in utilising digital tools in the sketching, design and presentation process of a landscape architecture project.

Ability to apply theories of image composition, colour use, and 3d representations into visualizations of own landscape architecture design project.

Competences:

Critical understanding of the way the tool or media informs the project comprehension and design decisions.

Evaluate how a specific landscape design project best translates into a digital visualisation communication.
