Lectures and exercises: - Introduction and review of disease control options - Disease monitoring and surveillance systems - general and disease dependent concepts - Basic epidemiology (measures of disease frequency, evaluation of diagnostic tests, sampling theory) - Simulation models - Theory of infectious diseases and epidemic dynamics - Assumptions about disease porcess and control points and strategies - Disease control and mathematical models (SIR) - Exercises on developing Reed-Frost epidemic models - Definition and requirements of GIS - Modeling of airborne spread of disease (FMD) - Exercises on epidemiology, disease modeling and GIS | |||||||||||||
Undervisningsform | |||||||||||||
Participants are provided with introductory texts to read before the course. During the course lectures and exercises are given in alternating order. Participants work individually and in groups at the theoretical and at the practical exercises, and with emphasis on practical applicaiton of disease control methods. After the course master students must select a topic for the individual project report relevant for the daily job or for the competences the participant wants to achive. The course lasts 1 week (37,5 hours), and the project, report writing and exam is expected to last ca. 100 hours. | |||||||||||||
Målbeskrivelse | |||||||||||||
At the end of the course, it is expected that the participant can do the following: Knowledge: - define, identify and describe disease outbreaks in farms animals at the farm, regional, national and international level - chose among methods for disease surveillance and disease modeling programs - critically select among control strategies Skills: - analyse surveillance data and identify relevant information as input in simulation models - evaluate alternative control options based on simulation results Comptences: - collaborate scientifically and administratively with parties involved in disease control - carry out disease control activities based on scientific modeling input - take responsibility and make decisions as a veterinary practitioner or as an official veterinarian | |||||||||||||
