Kompetenceområder | |||||||||||||||
Basic science: Comprehension of integrated approaches to biological questions using genetics, physiology, biochemistry and bioinformatics to relate plant phenotypes to genotype as platforms for modelling plant metabolism at the molecular level. Integration of basic knowledge on plants to understand complex biological process using plant model systems. Applied science: Understanding of the application of molecular and genetic tools for plant improvement through molecular breeding of crops for food, fodder and production of high value crops for biomedicine, biofuel, green factories, etc. Knowledge of the basic experimental techniques used in plant genomics and molecular breeding. Ethics and values: Awareness of the ethics surrounding the use of new molecular approaches in plant biotechnology e.g in relation to biodiversity. A joint session with the corresponding course on mammalian genomics will focus on the possibilities and constraints in plant and mammalian genomics as well on selected common topics of current interest.
Kursets målsætning | |||||||||||||||
To provide basic understanding of the structure of plant genomes and experience key techniques used for studies of genomes and molecular breeding. Focus will be on the relationship between phenotypic traits and genotypes and using the expanding information on plant genomes and RNA/DNA/protein sequences. The course begins with the genomics of the two model species, rice and Arabidopsis, and translates the principles to cultivated crops to understand the potential of genomic technology.
