Kompetenceområder
It is the aim that students obtain the following competencies within:

Basic sciences:
In depth knowledge of key experimental techniques applicable in physiological and nutritional studies in animals in vivo including their limitations and potentials.

Technology and Production:
1) Specific emphasis on experimental techniques employed to study processes underlying life manifestations of importance for food animal production (digestion, growth, lactation and adaptation to external and internal environments, selected organ measurements in situ).
2) Diploma which fullfills EU requirements for persons working with experimental animals.

Ethics and Values:
1) Ethical issues in relation to animal experimentation and alternatives to animal experimentation will be dealt with.

Kursets målsætning
Objectives of the course:
1) To introduce principles of animal experimentation and methods applied in animal physiology and nutrition. This in order to provide students with the necessary tools to be able to plan and design own animal research and to be able to critically evaluate methodologies and results obtained from animal research under different nutritional and physiological conditions.
2) To fullfill EU educational requirements for persons working with experimental animals.

Kursusindhold
The contents of the course covers:
1) Presentation of experimental techniques for assessment of whole animal function and metabolism of nutrients on whole animal and organ level (in vivo/in vitro). This covers both a theoretical introduction as well as practical demonstrations of key techniques.
2) A 30 h block which fulfills the educational requirements by EU and Denmark for persons working with experimental animals or assisting in animal experiments (a diploma will be issued upon completion of the course).
3) Principles necessary for planning and implementing in vivo or in vitro scientific investigations as well as for critically evaluating results obtained from such investigations. This includes such aspects as protocol planning, experimental design and data evaluation.

Undervisningsform
Theoretical course with lectures, some laboratory demonstrations and bi-weekly seminars. Individual activities will involve reviewing and presentation of handed-out scientific papers as well as seminar discussions of presented experimental techniques, where emphasis will be on evaluation of experimental design, techniques and approaches in relation to aims, obtained results and conclusions.

Litteraturhenvisninger
Selected reviews/research papers and a list of the literature to be used can be obtained from the course coordinators.
