Areas of Competence the Course Will Address
Competences obtained within basic science:
The student should get a comprehensive view of the basic chemistry and physics of plants. This knowledge is linked to the basic principles for production of plant biomass, including requirements for plant nutrition's, pest management, irrigation etc.
During the course the student will be able to use the knowledge on an interdisciplinary level to analyse, discuss and solve problems related to biomass production for non-food i.e. fuel and green chemicals applications. The students should be able to analyse and present research papers.

Competences obtained within applied science:
The students should be able to analyse and handle interdisciplinary problems in plant production in relation to biofuels and green chemicals. They should be able to suggest solutions and make calculation of the consequences of various solution models and be able to articulate the requirements necessary for optimal use of biomass for various industrial purposes.

Competence obtained within Ethics and Values:
Student should be aware of and discuss the ethical and environmental problems connected with plant production for non-food applications of biomass.

Course Objectives
The course will provide a link between agricultural and engineering sciences. The objectives are (1) to reach a level of knowledge and understanding where students can articulate options and potential problems on biomass utilisation, (2) make simple crop production and processing plans related to chemical and physical properties of different crops. (3) Principles and practice of different forms of biomass production. (4) Help solve problems related to different applications in relation types of production.

Course Contents
The course will start with a general introduction to plant biomass produced by agri- or silviculture. This will be followed by excursions to agricultural and forestry operations.

The basic principles for agricultural and silvicultural production will be presented, and the students will gain a good overall understanding through a series of theoretical exercises.

The chemical composition and physical structure of plants on a molecular, cellular and macroscopical level will be presented. The aim is to provide the student with a basic understanding of plant structure and the potential variation between species and varieties. This will provide the student with a tool for accessing the potential of biomass conversion technologies.
Practical excersizes will be included.

The plant ecosystem and its production potential will be introduced. The problems related to yield and sustainability as well as requirements for bioenergy production will be presented and discussed.

The teaching within biomass production as well as chemistry and physics of biomass will be combined in order to provide the student with a tool to evauluate specific crops and biomass production systems in relation application for biofuels and green chemicals.

Teaching And Learning Methods
The course will include lectures, theoretical excercises, practical exercises and excursions. Approximately 50% of the course will be lectures and discussions.
