Kompetenceområder
Competences obtained within basic science:
. Understanding of the biology of organisms(bacteria and fungi sensu lato)and virus which cause plant diseases .
. Knowledge of the biotic and abiotic factors responsible for the establishment of plant diseases

Competences obtained within applied science:
. An understanding of the principles of plant disease control (disease management).

Competence obtained within Ethics and Values:
. An understanding of the consequences for the environment and mankind through application of disease control

Kursets målsætning
Plant diseases are a major cause of losses of yield and spoilage of quality both during cultivation and after harvest. The course will give the student an overall introduction to the discipline plant pathology leading to an understanding of the biological aspects, which are the basis for the development of plant diseases. This will form the foundation for understanding basic principles for plant disease management. The student will also obtain knowledge of methods and technologies used.

Kursusindhold
The biology of the viruses, bacteria and fungi in a broad sense causing plant diseases.

Introduction to:
* the concepts symptomology, etiology,
pathogenicity, taxonomy and diagnosis

* the molecular, cellular and genetic aspects of
pathogenicity and disease resistance.

* basic ecological and epidemiological
principles in relation to the establishment
and spread of plant diseases.

* plant disease control measures (disease
management) - including prophylactic measures
and biological control,
disease resistance, forecasting, legislation
and chemical control.

* Post harvest diseases and food safety

* Case studies of plant diseases in agriculture, horticulture and forestry systems to facilitate
subsequent specialisation.
