Competences within Basic science: This course does not contribute to the student´ s knowledge within basic science. Competences within Applied science: - Be able to apply the principles of the LCA-method (Life-Cycle-Analysis) - Be able to make judgments about the conclusions in LCA-reports - Be able to apply this understanding on other relevant types of reports on environmental issues. - Be able to understand the basic principles within the topics mentioned under 'Course content' Competences within Ethics and Values - Be able to reflect over the environmental impact of horticultural production
Kursets målsætning | |||||||||||||||||||
On completion of the course student should be able to describe, analyse, evaluate the use of non-renewable resources within crop production. The students should be able to describe the effects of crop production on the external environment. The application of the course has its focus on primary horticultural production but the course has the aim of providing students with knowledge and experience generally applicable within the utilisation and conservation of natural resources.
Kursusindhold | |||||||||||||||||||
Various environmental and resource conservation problems that arise in conjunction with crop production are the core of the course. Different crop production systems are analysed and evaluated on their environmental impact as e.g. their use of non-renewable resources. For those systems, measures to reduce the negative effects on the environment are worked out and suggestions for modification are made and analysed. The course consists to a large extent of a number of projects that teach the students how to formulate, solve and analyse problematic environmental issues. This will be supplemented by a number of lectures giving the theoretical background for the project work as well as supplementary knowledge on various subjects. The course starts with some basic introductory lectures on the resource problematic and an overview of environmental laws and conventions. The latter lecture also teaches about information sources and how to use them. Socio-economic relationships governing the use of finite and renewable resources and energy sources as well as ethical aspects are treated, too. A general overview of environmental issues in different horticultural production systems finishes the general introduction. In the following the students will learn how to analyse environmental systems and how to improve them; here the life cycle assessment (LCA) will be used. The LCA method will be applied for three horticultural crops. For this, an Excel-based LCA calculation procedure is used. The students will be thoroughly introduced to that. Suggestions for system modifications and comparing analyses between the original systems and the suggested modified system will be the aim of the final group work. The LCA group work goes as red line throughout the course. After an introduction to LCA the students will participate lectures about the major environmental resources concerned in horticultural production system as pesticides, nutrients, and energy for the use in LCA. Measures to reduce negative effects of the crop production systems on the environment and the use of finite resources are taught. After that, the course focuses more on specific issues related to environment of the complete horticultural production chain. The resources water is treated thoroughly. Overviews fair trade, trade and its consequences for the environment; solar energy; biomass based fuels; certification; biodiversity and GMO are given. Horticultural technique for sustainable plant production will be explained in decision support systems, model based greenhouse climate control and precision farming. During two excursions to open field and greenhouse production companies the students have the possibility to deepen their gained theoretical knowledge. For the different subjects experts for each field are invited for presentations.
