Kompetenceområder
Competences obtained within basic science:

A comprehensive basic knowledge about mechanisms of ecophysiological tree adaptation.

Competences obtained within Applied science:

The students will gain knowledge and train the ability to apply the knowledge to practial tasks related to establishment and maintenance for health and stability of trees.

Competences obtained within Ethics and Values:
Reflections about the responsibilities of tree managers related to safety of humans and environmental protection are included in the course.

Subjects of the course are within basic science and technology/production.

Kursets målsætning
The course is directed towards all types of managers responsible for establishment, maintenance and health/stability diagnosis of trees.
To gain a basic understanding of selected ecological and ecophysiological mechanisms (plant/environment interaction) of particular importance for the practical use of plants and trees in forestry, arboriculture and landscape gardening. The course will be founded on practical tasks like plant production, establishment and m.

Kursusindhold
Management courses at KVL (e.g. Skovdyrkning, Planteanvendelse og Anlægsgartneri) do not provide a profound biological understanding of the relevant interactions between plant and environment. The latter is the main objective of this course. Focus is on plant properties and plant ecology of particular importance for production and establishment of different plant types (bareroots, containerplants, urban trees of different sizes) as well as for the longterm development in terms of growth, physical and physiological stability. These subjects are discussed for different environments (more or less open stands, solitary trees, contrasting climate and soil conditions). The genetic variation in some physiological parameters related to plant functionality will also be presented. The following topics will be dealt with: Phenology and dormancy, adaptive traits (frost, drought), growth processes of single organs of the tree related to plant functionality, biomass allocation, architecture and pruning of roots and crown, interactions with the ecosystem. The course relates to the following functional traits of trees: survival, growth rate and production, resistance, shelter, aesthetic values and soil development.

Undervisningsform
The first 2/3 of the course contains lectures, excersises, self studies and creation of mind-maps. An introduction to mind-maps will be given. Mind-maps are used for visualization and to systematize the obtained knowledge. Thus, mindmaps are used for current repitition and enhanced learning efficiency. Working groups must produce three mind-maps during the course. The last third of the course will be project group work within one of the following three lines: a) forestry, b) Urban tree management, c) Ecophysiology.
