Kompetenceområder
Competences obtained within basic science:

Comprehend the basic physical principles of interaction between radiation and matter.
Transfer the field of application by combining physical principles and methods with actual biological problems.
Evaluate feasibility and limitation in relation to applied methods and obtained results.
Transfer the obtained competences to courses within applied science.

Competences obtained within applied science:

Apply appropiate and relevant (bio-) physical methods in relation to biological topics and problems.
Understand new and current physical methods within e.g. (bio-)nano science.

Kursets målsætning
The aim of the course is to provide a thorough fundamental knowledge of various physical methods applied to modern biological science. Education in the nature of radiation and the mechanisms of its interaction with matter supplemented by practical instrumental demonstrations provide the basis for proposing and evaluating relevant structural, dynamic and analytical physical methods in biology.

Kursusindhold
The course comprises the following three general themes: A) Basic understanding of radiation, matter and the interaction between radiation and matter, B) Applied physical methods related to structural, dynamic, energetic and analytical information and C) Specific methods involving micro- and nano-techniques.

A. Basic: Interaction of radiation with matter; Structural, dynamic, energetic and analytical methods; Electromagnetic radiation; Particle/wave duality; Physical characterisation of matter; Electric and magnetic dipole; Refractive index; Particles: Nuclei, atoms, isotopes, ions, electrons; Quantum mechanics; Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution law; Excitation sources; Detectors; Data handling; Sampling.

B. Applied, general: Absorption, scattering and emission techniques: NMR (protein structure); X-Ray fluorescence (multi-element analysis); X-Ray diffraction (structure, dynamics); Isotope techniques, tracers and dosimetry (trace elements, genetic modification); UV- and visible absorption spectrometry (analytical); Fluorescence spectrometry (analytical); Static and dynamic light scattering (structural, dynamic); IR/NIR (identification, analytical).

C. Applied, specific: Micro- and nano techniques primarily related to structural analysis: Light microscopy; Scanning electron microscopy; Transmission electron microscopy; Atomic force microscopy; Capillary X-Ray techniques; Synchrotron radiation; EXAFS; X-Ray photo emission; X-Ray standing waves.

Undervisningsform
The teaching comprises: Lectures, including guest lectures, will cover the fundamental topics related to the course content parts A, B and C. Small experimental demonstrations in relation to the physical methods and the biological topics are provided. Theoretical exercises are scheduled 2 hours per week. The tripartion of the course enables a partly implementation in other courses e.g. the food technology course "Quantitative Food Spectroscopy".
