Kompetenceområder
Basic science
The course will give the student knowledge of the basic concepts being used when acquiring, automating, handling, analysing and presenting geographical information - including digital maps. This way the student will obtain the needed theoretic as well as practical skills and competences. He/she will be enabled to use the achieved theoretic knowledge when evaluation the quality of available data and produced results.

Applied science
The student will learn to handle the GIS-programme ArcGIS from ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute). The course - and the material being used - will enable the student independently to used and understand GIS in the context of their own work related to projects and exercises during and after their study.

Ethics and values
The student must be made aware of possibilities and potential problems related to the use of GIS and geo data. This way he/she will be able to reflect upon and discuss analytical, communicative and organisational aspects - directly and indirectly in relation to programs being used for the course.

Kursets målsætning
Geographical information Systems are being used routinely in the public as well as the private sector for planning and management. At the same time laypersons are using GIS when searching information and guidance via the Internet. In this light it the objective of the course to provide the student with the needed practical and principal understanding of the special aspects in relation to geographical information - analytical, technically, organisationally and communicatively.

Kursusindhold
The course is constituted by:
Introduction to elementary concepts
Data acquisition and automation
Danish data sources - how to find and acquire
Data formats - how data are converted, transformed and imported
Systems for storage and proliferation of geo data
The vector data model (discrete objects)
Handling attribute data
The raster data model (continues phenomena)
Digital elevation models
Digital cartography
Internet based GIS

Undervisningsform
The course is constituted by lectures, exercises and project work. The practical exercises and the project work are comparable in time expenditure. It is recommended that the projects are conjoined with activities related to other courses and project works.
