Kompetenceområder
Basic Sciences. Knowledge of the origin, biology, ecology and definitions of weeds on arable and public land. Weed identification at seedling stage and interplay between the crop/natural vegetation and the weeds.
Applied Sciences. Understand harmful effects in relation to completive ability, phenological development; comprehend quantitative relationships. Understand and make judgment of the soil preparation, crop rotation, physical, biological and chemical weed control. Comprehend thresholds of weed infestation and control measures necessary to prevent crop loss and vegetation changes of natural habitats. Transfer knowledge of weed management in crops to new situations and make sound judgment of the impact of weed control in both field and environment.
Ethics and Values. Some weed management measures are controversial issues in the public and in some scientific quarters. The course makes students aware of various attitudes to weeds and make them reflect over current weed management to make them able to discuss weed control on arable and public land in relation to both benefits and side effects.

Kursets målsætning
To expose students to scientific principles of weed biology, ecology and management in conventional and ecological agriculture, horticulture, forestry and public land. A comprehension of both advantages and disadvantages of the weed management measures is pivotal for those who wish to work with sustainable agriculture, horticulture and forestry public land, as well and students interested in various aspects of crop protection.

Kursusindhold
The frame of references of the course is identification, biology, ecology, competitive effects and management of weeds. This applies to the weeds of agriculture, horticulture and forestry as well as invasive species and environmental weeds on public land and "natural" plant communities. The emphasis is placed upon the quantification of the harmful effects of weeds in relation to their biology and ecology, and how the weed floras, by ways of mere evolution and adaptation, infest areas and sustain control measures. Tillage, crop rotation and physical, biological and chemical control measures are integral parts of the course, as is the quantification of the efficacy of the control measures and their advantages and disadvantages as well as their impact on weed populations and plant communities inside and outside the arable land. Legislation and impact of various domestic and foreign action plans on pesticides, nitrogen and EU-Water Framework Directive will also be part of the curriculum.
The excursion will take place in the first part of the course to DJF Flakkebjerg.

Undervisningsform
Lectures will outline the theoretical background for the course and support the practical and theoretical exercises. The excursion will take place in the first part of the course to DJF Flakkebjerg. Practical exercises will be in the area of weed identification, survey method to assess weed infestations in crops and elsewhere, and in greenhouses experiments with mixtures of crop and weeds, and ways of assessing their competitive effects, selectivity of soil and aerial applied herbicides. Test organisms are various crops and weed species. The students do proper statistical analysis of the practical exercises involving own data by statistical software; e.g. the language and environment R and/or SAS. The theoretical exercises will deal with physical weed management, the distinction between longevity and life-forms of weeds, weed management intensity and the environmental impact of weed management measures.
