Rammer for undervisningThe course consists mainly of problem-based studies in small groups supervised by teachers. The course takes place at KVL-Tåstrup, as it is dependent on material from fields. One or two excursions are included.

Kompetenceområder
Competences obtained within basic science:
- Knowledge of plant pathogen and pest morphology and taxonomy
- Knowledge of host symptoms caused by pathogens and pests

Competences obtained within applied science:
- Understanding tools (including webbased) used for identifying plant pathogens and pest species
- Apply principles for diagnosis of plant diseases or pests based on pathogen/pest morphology and host symptoms

Competences obtained within ethics & values:
- Is aware of the ethical and economical aspects of whether action has to be taken
 
Kursets målsætning
The course will give the students opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in diagnosis of plant diseases and pests. The course is concerned with plant health problems in agriculture and horticulture (greenhouses, orchards and field crops)with special reference to North European conditions.
 
Kursusindhold
The students learn:
- how to diagnose - step by step -commonly occurring plant diseases and pests using simple practical methods (including webbased tools).
- how to identify pest species from their morphology, host and host symptoms
-how to identify pathogenic fungi, bacteria and virus from their pathogen morphology, host and host symptoms
- how to describe, characterise and assess damage in the field and how to take a sample for further study.
 
Undervisningsform
The course consists of short theoretical introductions to specific topics and problem-based studies including field collections, identification and diagnosis of plant pests and diseases using keys, manuals and microscopes. Most of the work is carried out in groups of two students supervised by the teachers. The Danish students attending the course will learn English as well as Danish terminology. One or two excursions are included.
