Anbefalede forudsætningerIntroduction to Horticulture or corresponding knowledge about horticultural or agricultural production

Kompetenceområder
Basic science:
Comprehend the basic climatic elements on plant, field and greenhouse level. Transfer the field of application by combination of basic principles and elements with relevant crop problems.
Understanding the effect of different climate parameters (e.g. radiation, humidity, temperature, CO2) and their interaction on crop production.

Applied science:
Understanding of how to design plant experiments where the climate is part of the experimental setup. Knowledge about the technical methods that are available to manage climate conditions in greenhouse and field production systems.
Are able to discuss production of horticultural crops from a technical and climatical point of view.

Ethics and Values: None

Kursets målsætning
The aim of the course is to make the students able to understand the effect of climate parameters and their influence on crop production. During the course the students gain understanding of how to operate a modern greenhouse and field production system from a climate point of view. During the course the students also learn to plan and perform scientific experiments.

Kursusindhold
To a substantial extent this is a 'hands on' course were students are performing practical work including cases taken from practical horticultural production.

There are three main activities involved: 1) lectures, 2) practical exercises, and 3) experimental work. The keywords in the experimental work are planning performance analysis and documentation by the students. Groups of 2-4 students and a supervisor discuss and decide which topics to include in the final report resulting from experimental work.

The course is divided in several topics that are taught by different qualified experts of each field. When possible theoretical lectures is combined with practical exercises.

Topics during the course:
- Climate and thermal processes (thermodynamics)
- Sensors for climate registration and crop monitoring
- Data acquisition and processing
- Climate management in greenhouse (heating, vents, CO2 injection, screens, artificial light etc.)
- Climate management in field production (mulching, use of plastic, windbreak, spectral changes, frost protection etc.)
- Examples of practical use climate management for control of pests, quality, elongation growth and other plant processes
- Different kinds of protected cultivation now and in the future (growth chambers, production in space etc.)
- Models, decision support systems and crop optimisation
- Experiment arrangement, performance and documentation

Undervisningsform
The course consist of theoretical lectures, practical exercises, excursions as well as group project work. The exercises and experiments are performed within groups of 2-4 students. Exercise reports are worked out individually. Included education methods are case studies, computer analyses, problem based learning, lectures, practical exercises and several visits to commercial companies.
