Kompetenceområder
Students shall become knowledgeable about the nature of plant genetic resources, their origin, dynamics and importance to an extend that qualify for managing national parks and tree planting programmes

The student shall learn how different types of forest and land use influence the genetics of plants and associated animals. Also, different approaches to domestication and conservation, and their options/limitations in different anthropogenic and ecological contexts.

The student shall become able to make judgements on the likely effects of given domestication and conservation programme, and evaluate to which extent they may can be considered to provide genetic gains and/or be in conflict with long term sustainable management of the natural resources.

The student shall become familar with ethical aspects and dilemmas in conservation and domestication, and handling of conflicting interests based on understanding of contrasting perceptions of values among stakeholders

Kursets målsætning
The objective of course is to provide comprehensive understanding of options and challenges in management of genetic resources seen both from a national level as well as a very local level. The course should provide the students wtih skills that allows easy inclusion of genetic aspects in a number of other management considerations related to forest, land and costal zone management, conservation programmes and trees planting activities

Kursusindhold
The course covers practical and theoretical considerations regarding:

Genetic stewardship and conservation; Diversity at the species, population and individual level; Population dynamics and corresponding genetic proceses; Mechanisms behind long, intermediate and short term evolution and co-evolution, Directs and indirect impacts of land use on genetic resources of plants and associated animals; Strategies for domestication plants including the role and implications of biotechnology; genetic diversity in breeding and deployment populations; Genetically sound principles for seed procurement for planting programmes including seed source-to-planting-site matching based on development of planting zones; Dynamic and static approacheds to conservation of genetic resources in situ and ex situ; Genetic modified plants in forestry, agricultural and landscape management including options and risk assessment; National and local approaches to conservation management of target species including priority setting and management of conflicting interests; Ethical considerations in conservation

Undervisningsform
The course will be a combination of lectures, excercises, work with case studies and preparation of a small synopsis on a selected topic.

Litteraturhenvisninger
The course will rest on Reports, scientific papers and case studies.
