Kursets målsætning | |||||||||||||||||
To reach a level of knowledge and understanding where students can analyse and handle pest and disease problems related to different types of plant production (i.e., primary level: conventional and integrated production (IP) as well as organic production and secondary level: e.g., fruit, vegetable, greenhouse and arable production).
Kursusindhold | |||||||||||||||||
The course provides an essential part of the training needed for students who wish to enter an advisory career in agricultural and horticultural extension services or in the Administration of environmental protection. The course also provides a useful part of the training needed for students who wish to conduct research in plant protection. Topics: - Terminologies and advanced aspects of plant pathology and pest biology and management - Principals of preventative and curative measures for the control of plant pests and diseases under different production systems (organic, integrated production and conventional production) - Determine plans at farm and crop level for plant protection against plant pests and diseases as related to the principals outlined above. - Evaluation of consequences of preventative and curative measures on the environment. - Key aspects of national and international legislation pertaining to plant protection. - An understanding of the potential for biotechnological and biological solutions for controlling pests and diseases. It is expected that the student projects will provide subjects for group work and journal. As inspiration for potential topics for study: . The effects of the reports by, for example, the Bichel and Kirsten Jensen committees on the possibilities for using chemical treatments in plant production systems. . Ethics and other problems associated with the control of pests and pathogens using genetic engineering. . Problems associated with e.g., organic production forms, own seed. Internal and external presentations and journal clubs will cover broad aspects associated with the production of healthy crops.
Undervisningsform | |||||||||||||||||
The course will introduce the students to recent research results and their application within these areas. . Project group work (groups of 3 to 6 students) designed to describe and analyse key aspects of plant protection problems in production or other relevant situations. . Theoretical exercises based on primary literature (journal club). . Excursions to relevant research institutions, extension services and production forms chosen to illustrate current and previous problems. . Selected presentations introducing the key themes of plant protection.
