Course Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide an introduction to the New-Institutional Economics framework and its applications mainly on agriculture, Agribusiness, and Cooperatives - related problems. Topics covered: theory of institutions, transaction costs, the theory of agency, theory of property rights and theory of collective action. There will be several applications examined in agriculture and agribusiness-related problems such as agricultural contracts and vertical coordination.
 
Course Contents
The Food industry consists a major part not only of the agricultural sector at large, but of the Danish economy as well. The economic organisation of this industry and the role of cooperatives is the focus of this course. There will be several applications examined in agriculture and agribusiness-related problems: agricultural contracts, vertical coordination and organisation in the Agri-Food chain, cooperatives.
 
Teaching And Learning Methods
There will be regular lectures by the course instructor. Students will have to make also two presentations each: a) one on a theoretical subject, selected in consultation with the instructor; b) one presentation on an applied case-study project which the students will have to prepare from a list of topics provided by the instructor.
