To introduce students to the key methods used to quantify environmental problems as needed to select appropriate solution methods, including environmental technology. To introduce students to the primary methods used to solve problems related to pollution abatement, such as treatment of solid waste, waste water, air, odour and noise pollution as well as cleanup of chemical contaminants. | |||||||||||||
Kursusindhold | |||||||||||||
The course will present the main methods used to quantify environmental problems with respect to choosing pollution abatement methods, including environmental technology. Methods that combine mass- and energy-balances with ecological principles will be presented. The use of environmental management models in the selection of environental technologies will also be discussed. Next, groundwater occurrence, physiochemical properties, testing and treatment will be presented, with emphasis on requirements for the food and other bioproduction industries. This will be followed by a presentation of problems related to handling and treatment of waste water, air pollution, odours, noise pollution, chemical contaminants and agricultural and domestic solid waste. Selected topics include composting, biogas plants and wetland recontruction. Finally, the ecotechnology approach to analysis of environmental problems and development of 'clean technology' will be introduced. The course is recommended for students who upon completion of their studies will be employed in sectors dealing with environmental issues, e.g. in public inspection, environmental consulting and the bioproduction and manufacturing industries. | |||||||||||||

In addition to lectures there will be a series of weekly calculation assignments. Several written assignments in the form of short reports will also be assigned. | |||||||||||||
