Kursets målsætning | |||||||||||||||||||
To introduce experimental principles and methods applied in animal physiology and nutrition in order to provide students with the tools necessary to carry out and evaluate results obtained from animal research (e.g. poultry, pigs, ruminants and mink) under different physiological (e.g. growth, pregnancy and lactation) and nutritional conditions For the students to attain a depth of relevant scientific knowledge within pre-selected areas of physiological and nutritional research.
Kursusindhold | |||||||||||||||||||
Knowledge of quantitative nutrient and energy metabolism is fundamental for the evaluation of nutrient utilization and requirement in different life processes and for the development of nutritional strategies and methods of feed evaluation in relation to the optimisation of production, product composition/quality as well as various environmental factors. The experimental methods introduced will focus on the evaluation of whole animal function and the metabolism of nutrients at both the whole animal and organ level (in vivo/vitro). Collated information from experimental research will be used in conjunction with biological models describing metabolic responses to a wide variety of nutritional and environmental conditions. Students will be provided with the principles necessary to; (1) plan and implement in vivo or in vitro scientific investigations where attention is given to the identification of specific scientific questions of relevance to the selected field of research and the selection of appropriate methodological approaches, including such aspects as protocol planning, experimental design, data sampling, collection and evaluation, (2) assimilate and write a scientific manuscript - literature overview, aims, methodology, results + graphic presentation, interpretation, discussion including a retrospective assessment of the suitability of the methodological approach adopted, conclusions and applications/perspectives.
Undervisningsform | |||||||||||||||||||
The course is organized into modules with; (1) a theoretical module comprising lectures and demonstrations (duration approx. 3 weeks) - also including the writing of a research protocol to be applied in the following module, (2) an experimental block comprising animal experimentation and laboratory work in groups both at KVL and Danish Institute of Animal Sciences (duration 8 weeks) - seminars will run concurrently throughout this period of the course, and (3) a module focusing on data analysis, interpretation and presentation in the form of a scientific report. The collated data will be written as a group report documenting knowledge of both the major disciplines within the research area chosen and the application of relevant scientific methods. The report will culminate in a document that will closely follow the structure and principles of a scientific publication (i.e. max. 15 pages), and results will be presented as a poster and a powerpoint presentation at a concluding seminar.
