Kursets målsætning |
The objective of the course is to give the student a profound basis for dealing with animal production and livestock keeping in developing countries. The course aims to give the students' knowledge and holistic understanding of the theoretical basis for animal production in developing as well as industrialised countries. Importance is attached to a description of the conditions in those developing countries that are given the highest priority in connection with the Danish development aid. |

Kursusindhold |
The course has been established to give students who are interested in working in developing countries a scientific foundation for and practical approach to their future work. However, the course also aims to give students from other disciplines an insight in animal husbandry. Moreover, animal husbandry students who are mainly interested in temperate (Danish) agriculture can through this course obtain a broader view on their field of specialization.
The primary aims of the course are: * to give the students knowledge about the natural and community-determined conditions of animal husbandry in developing countries and the resultant production
* to make the students able to assess different animal production systems in there physical, social and cultural context and suggest actions for improvement
* to impart comprehension of the crucial problems in the livestock sector
* to examine to what extent 'experts' (foreign or local) should contribute to the transfer of technology and whenever this technologies should come from within the society or from advanced production systems
* to enable the students to undertake specific task such as feed evaluation, feed planning, basic diagnostic, etc.
When the course is finished, the students should have knowledge of:
*the importance and diversity of animal products at global, regional, national and household level the productivity of livestock (milk, meat, eggs, hides/skin draught power, fuel and nutrients in manure) in different production systems
*the role livestock as status symbols, social commodity, investment, savings account, input in crop production, etc.
*the natural, political and socio-economic restraints to stimulating the livestock production in developing countries. These restraints include poor infrastructure and underdeveloped veterinary, extension or other service sectors
*characteristic feeding material and the seasonality of the feed production
*the genetic production capacity and the possibilities for improvement of indigenous and imported populations of livestock by means of purebreeding and crossbreeding
*the most important diseases among domestic animals and their influence on animal production, and the possibilities of prevention and treatment
*production potentials and possibilities for improvement by means of feeding and management
*relevant international research institutions and animal husbandry research programmes in developing countries. |

Undervisningsform |
The course emphasis on creating an inspiring learning environment, this mean that the students are expected to be active players in the conduction of the course. The learning process is stratified in three phases: information transfer (mainly through lectures), information transformation/reflection (through reading and exercises), and information exchange (through discussions). Each week will work with a specific theme. Lectures will be conducted by a number of guest lectures, each specialist within their respective fields. To support each theme written exercises has to be conducted. In order to facilitate the need for working in-dept with an area of individual interest each student writes a project. Both the exercises and the project has to be handed in by the end of the course and form each 1/3 of the final grade, the last 1/3 is measured as performance during the oral examination. It is optional for students if they want to work in groups or individually. |
