Course Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a solid base for understanding virus biology, principles of classical virus control as well as modern biotechnology related to plant viruses. The participants will become familiar with important viral diseases in Denmark and other parts of the world.Molecular biology and current research literature are integrated parts of the course.

Course Contents
Topics covered by the course includes :Virus taxonomyViral replication strategiesVirus transmission Symptoms and diagnosisImportant viral diseasesCrop protection in EUVirus control in fields and green-housesHost resistance and defenceGene silencing - natural defence and engineered resistanceTransposons and viroidsVirus-like organisms (Phytoplasma)Molecular methods in plant virologyViral elements in transgenic plantsViruses as gene vectors

Teaching And Learning Methods
Lectures will be based on reviews and primary research articles. Theoretical exercises will focus on gathering information on specific diseases caused by viruses. This includes information on the virus, means of spread, host range, control etc. the information will beassembled in a short report to be finished before the autumn break and approved by the teachers. Each report will be presented and discussed by the students in a series of colloquia after the autumn break.
