Kursets målsætning | |||||||||||||||
The course comprises an extensive treatment of theories for the identification, evaluation, manipulation, conservation and exploitation of genetic variation in both horticultural and agricultural plants. This course provides in-depth understanding of the potential and obligations of plant breeding nationally and internationally as well as the theoretical basis for participation in theme course projects with a genetical dimension.
Kursusindhold | |||||||||||||||
Main elements of course content: · Biometrical methods in plant breeding. Genetic and environmental components of variance. Heritability, selection theory, inbreeding, and heterosis. · Genotype-by-environment interaction and its importance, as well as analysis of genetic stability. · Planning and managing breeding programmes: decision making, resource allocation, and software for analysis of experiments. · Genetic resources, their conservation, characterisation, and exploitation. Genetic vulnerability of plants species. Importance of in situ and ex situ conservation of genetic resources for production and society. · Biotechnology in plant breeding: Micropropagation, cryopreservation, cell culture, haploids, protoplast fusion, genetic transformation, and molecular markers. · Breeding for resistance to fungi, bacteria, viruses and insects: Genetic variation, types of resistance and selection methods. · Breeding for quality: Criteria in horticultural and agronomic plants. Selection potential. Winter hardiness, drought resistance, cold tolerance, photo-respiration, and the ideotype concept.
