Kursets målsætning | |||||||||||
The objective of the course is to give the students an understanding of the natural resources of importance to the tropical and subtropical agriculture, along with the potential, limitations and vulnerability of these resources. In particular, this understanding will be based on low-input agriculture and agricultural production under marginal conditions. The use of examples of agricultural changes and their historical context is an important element of the pedagogic approach.
Kursusindhold | |||||||||||
It is important for students that work with natural sciences to get an insight in the fundamental conditions of tropical agricultural production, so that they know the space nature gives agriculture in developing countries. This insight may form the basis for a specialisation in tropical agriculture through the Master programme 'Agricultural Development'. However, such insight is also important to understand the globalisation of agriculture that takes place today. Students will be introduced to the special conditions that characterise the agricultural production in the tropics and subtropics involving climatic, human, soil and livestock conditions through the following subjects: - Meteorology, topography, demography, climate of the tropics and subtropics - Tropical farming systems - Tropical plant production and animal husbandry - Soil and water conservation - Tropical pest and pest management - The Green Revolution and the Double Green revolution - Biodiversity - Organic farming in the tropics At each session, the historical development will be highlighted and related to todays condition.
